A Special Child
by Pastor Dave Tucker
The other day I was sitting in my daughter’s home, holding her new baby girl. As I gazed at her tiny face, a thousand thoughts ran through my mind. Who will she become? What will she do? Where will life take her? How tall will she grow? Will she fall in love with Jesus? Will she marry someday? Question after question filled my heart as I held that precious new life.
And then it struck me: imagine Mary and Joseph over 2,000 years ago, staring into the face of their newborn Son—the face of God Himself. What will He become? How will we raise Him? Does He know He is God? What could we possibly teach Him? Their questions must have been overwhelming, and yet Scripture must have rushed back to them as they remembered the words of the prophet Isaiah describing the Child in their arms:
“The government will be on His shoulders”—He will carry the weight of ruling His people.
Wonderful Counselor— Divine guide with extraordinary wisdom and insight
Mighty God— One true God and He would be full of superior strength and might.
Everlasting Father— One who cares for His people with perfect strength, patience, and protection.
Prince of Peace—One who brings peace to our souls, our relationships, our communities, and eventually the whole universe.
Can you imagine the mixture of questions, awe, and peace they must have felt?
This Child—Jesus—was born in a feed trough, to poor parents, in a crowded and chaotic Bethlehem. His first visitors were lowly shepherds. And yet this baby would change everything. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
So I challenge you, in this busy Christmas season, to pause and ponder the breathtaking story of our Savior’s birth. Whether you’ve heard it once or a thousand times, let the details settle into your heart. Allow that first Christmas night to fill you again with wonder and awe.
Our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace has come.
